Martha’s Vineyard, with its rich history of the Native American Wampanoags, immigrants, farmers, fishermen, blacksmiths, and merchants, does not disappoint. As the ferry docks, you will be captivated by the beauty, colors, restaurants, shops, and cobblestone streets. There is something for everyone here, whether it’s a couple’s date, a family trip, or, as we did last September, a mother-daughter trip to celebrate high school graduation. Here’s what you need to know for a day trip to Martha’s Vineyard.
How to Get to the Island
Martha’s Vineyard is located seven miles off the coast of Massachusetts. You can get there by sea or air. Most people take the year-round ferry using The Steamship Authority or Hy-Line Cruises. The high-speed ferry makes the trip in about an hour. Summer is busy and there can be lines. It’s best to buy your tickets online to reserve your spot.
How to Get Around on the Island
When you step off the dock, you’ll find yourself right in the hub of activity, with many shops and restaurants nearby. There are a variety of options for moving around the island. If you plan ahead, you can bring your car onto the island, but be aware that you need reservations to bring your car on the ferry, streets are quite crowded with walkers and other vehicles, and there isn’t a lot of parking. The Vineyard Transit Authority offers a schedule of bus routes. There are a variety of bicycle rental shops where you can rent an electric or non-electric bike. We rented electric bikes and had SO much fun! You can also get a taxi or an Uber.
Things To Do on the Island
There is so much to do! Because of this, it can be helpful to plan out what you want to do in advance. My impression had always been that it’s a small island where you could probably hop on a bike and zigzag around, hitting the things that interest you. But the island is 20+ miles long and 9 miles wide. Think “Disney.” You map out the rides you want to go on and plan your route. Same here.
The Martha’s Vineyard Chamber of Commerce does a great job helping you plan your trip. You may want to see the beaches and lighthouses, ride the Flying Horses Carousel (the oldest carousel of its kind in the U.S.), walk through the gingerbread houses neighborhood, visit the alpacas, or get lunch and pick up your Jaws t-shirt (Jaws was filmed on the Vineyard). Here’s a great resource for your many options.
Have Fun!
Bring water, wear comfortable shoes, and throw a sweatshirt or light jacket in your bag, even if it’s hot out. And don’t be surprised if you see a celebrity during your visit, as the Vineyard has been home to the likes of Dan Aykroyd, Ted Danson, Carly Simon, the Obamas, and others. There are many mansions in this beautiful setting, which serve as a getaway and special wedding venue to the rich and famous.
