We all know that walking can be a great form of low-impact exercise with many health benefits. It can reduce your risk of chronic diseases and improve your overall mental health and cognitive function. On Cape Cod, there are plenty of walking trails along beaches, in the woods, and on paved trails for easier access. Read on to find some of the best walks on Cape Cod.

Beach walks on Cape Cod

Craigville Beach, Barnstable
This scenic beach walk starts at the Craigville Beach parking lot. There is plenty of parking, and it is free after hours and in the off-season. Walk east or west along Nantucket Sound for views of Squaw Island or the Centerville River.

Brewster Flats, Brewster
Did you know that the most expansive tidal flats in the world are located right here on Cape Cod? At low tide, the flats extend over a mile into Cape Cod Bay. You can stroll at any of the eleven Brewster bayside beaches.

Nauset Beach, Orleans
This iconic ocean-side beach has ten miles of coastline. The rolling dunes and crashing waves provide a serene and beautiful backdrop for your walk. Watch for our most famous marine animal, the great white shark, as they are commonly seen along the shore.

Woods walks on Cape Cod

Nickerson State Park, Brewster
This 1900-acre state park in Brewster is an excellent place for a camping trip and a fantastic place to walk on Cape Cod. Over a dozen wooded trails traverse some hilly terrain and encircle the freshwater ponds.

Atlantic White Cedar Swamp Trail, Wellfleet
This 1.2-mile loop trail is part of the Cape Cod National Seashore. A boardwalk winds through the sometimes spooky cedar swamp. Listen carefully; sometimes, you can hear the waves crashing on nearby Marconi Beach.

Beebe Woods, Falmouth
Park at Highfield Hall in Falmouth to access these gorgeous wooded trails. The varied terrain keeps your walk interesting, and the pond views are beautiful. One of the trails even leads to Peterson’s Farm, home to sheep you can view in their pasture.

Paved walks on Cape Cod

Cape Cod Canal
The canal offers over seven miles of paved pathways. Bike riders, runners, and walkers alike enjoy this scenic trail.

Cape Cod Rail Trail
Twenty-five miles of paved trails connect towns from Yarmouth to Wellfleet. Many access points are throughout the Cape, and the trails are kept up nicely.

Shining Sea Bikeway, Falmouth
From Woods Hole to North Falmouth, this stunning trail is attractive to bikers and walkers. The trail winds along the Vineyard Sound and is over ten miles long.

Other tips for finding walks on Cape Cod

Check out your town’s local conservation areas. Many have trails open to the public that are worth a visit!
